England, Tudor Monarch Henry VIII 1509-1547 Gold Angel (5.13g) S-2265 NGC AU58
Obverse-The Archangel Michael spearing fallen dragon like the devil, 'HENRIC VIII DI GRA REX AGL Z FR'. Reverse - Ancient British ship with central mast a cross, upon which is the Royal Arms, 'h' and rose either side. 'PER CRVCE TVA SALVA NOS XPE REDE', (By the cross save us, Oh Christ our Redeemer). Very rare first issue when little gold was issued because the economy was in such a bad state because of King Henry’s extravagant lifestyle.
Henry VIII was the second monarch of the House of Tudor, succeeding his father, Henry VII. Besides his six marriages, Henry VIII is known for his role in the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church. Henry's struggles with Rome led to the separation of the Church of England establishing himself as the Supreme Head of the church of England.
He ruled with absolute power and his desire to provide England with a male heir. This led to the two things that Henry is remembered for: his six marriages, and the English reformation, which made England a mostly Protestant nation. In later life he became morbidly obese and his health suffered; his public image is frequently depicted as one of a lustful, egotistical, harsh, and insecurely large king sitting on his throne.
