AU Fine Style. Roman Republic Anonymous Moneyer 225-212 BC Silver Quadrigatus (6.70g) NGC AU Strike 5/5 Surface 3/5 minor graffito noted but this coin earned the Fine Style designation for above average craftsmanship and artistry. 
Obverse- The Dioscuri- Janiform beardless facing opposite directions.
Reverse- Jupiter in quadriga galloping right, driven by winged Victory; Jupiter holding sceptre in left hand and hurling thunderbolt with right hand; below, incuse ROMA inscription on raised tablet.
Experts today consider Quadrigatus Silver coinage as the pre-cursor to the Roman Denarius that started in 211 BC. They were twice as heavy (6.72g) and more artistic than the standard Roman Denarius (3.24g). In Roman mythology, Janus is the god of gates, doors, doorways, beginnings, endings and time. Most often he is depicted as having two heads, facing opposite directions; one head looks back at the last year while the other looks forward to the new, simultaneously into the future and the past. Janus was usually depicted with two heads facing in opposite directions. The name quadrigatus comes from the quadriga or four-horse chariot on the reverse.
