Copper half follis struck in Cyzicus, in the second year of his reign. Phocas is one of the great villains in Byzantine history, murderous and incompetent. Phocas was overthrown and killed by Heraclius. The dynasty founded by Heraclius would rule for the next century. History is written by the victors. There are reasonable arguments that Phocas was unjustly vilified by historians favorable to Heraclius, in order to make the revolt (or usurpation) of Heraclius seem justified and righteous. Among the criticisms of Phocas, it is said that his physical appearance was monstrous and grotesque. Looking at some of his coins, that may well be true.
