A Rare Pegasus Stater from a smaller Kingdom. Never before offered!
This coin was minted in the western Greek city of Leucas, which was located on an island in the Ionian Sea. Leucas, along with other small settlements in the region, were founded by the Corinthians in the 7th century BC and over time they became the Acarnania confederacy, who sought independence from Corinthia.
During the fifth century B.C. the Arcananians were allied with Athens in order to maintain their independence against Corinth and Sparta. Because they were located strategically on the maritime route to Italy, Acarnania was involved in many wars. Their natural hatred against the Corinthian settlers, who had deprived them of all their best commercial ports, naturally led the Acarnanians to side with Athens and whoever they fought.
However, Arcanania would come under Spartan control for a short time in the next fourth century B.C. But they continued to make their own coinage, but in smaller quantities after they gained their independence again.
Just another nice Ancient depiction of the famous Pegasus on Silver from a smaller Greek Mint.
Obverse: Pegasus with pointed wing flying right
