👑Elizabeth I was one of the most famous and successful monarchs in all English history. In government, Elizabeth was more moderate than her father and half-siblings had been. She was patron of the arts, enjoying music and theatre, encouraging the creation of 'Queen Elizabeth’s Men' - her very own royal troupe.

She also made her own rules! In 1566, parliament attempted to force her into marriage, but she defied them greatly and became known as 'the virgin queen' - claiming she was married only to her country.

This beautiful coin is an Elizabeth I (1558-1603), Sixth issue, ‘Crown Gold’ Pound, initial mark key over woolpack (c.1594-98).
