Otho is the second emperor to briefly rule in the “Year of the Four Emperors”. In succession the Roman Empire would be ruled by Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian.
•
•
Otho was Roman emperor from January to April 69 CE. Immediately after he ordered the assassination of Galba, Otho was proclaimed emperor by the army. However, the unrest that existed in the short reign of Galba would spell doom for the newly named leader of enormous Roman Empire.
•
•
Otho would move quickly after a rumor circled he was not Galba’s first choice in the line of succession. With the support and assistance of the Praetorian Guard, Otho masterminded Galba’s assassination.

•
His short reign was to come falling down around him. Pressure to rule from Vitellius who was supported by a larger Army scared Otho.
