The Hartwell was a British East India Company trader that was sailing to India when a failed mutiny broke out amongst her crew on May 20th, 1787. The captain ordered the Hartwell to divert to the Cape Verde Islands to hand over the mutineers. On May 24th the Hartwell struck a reef northeast of Boa Vista Island and sank, taking her entire cargo of mostly 8 Reales with her.
