. From a supposed “Pirate Shipwreck”, the source of the coins are shrouded in mystery. Almost all the cobs discovered are Assayer D, Diego de Godoy, 4 or 8 Reales from Mexico City Mint. None exceed the date 1628 so it’s suspected the vessel(s) carrying the coins sunk Circa. 1628. These coins were accidentally discovered in 1964 in 10 feet of water near the Lucayan Beach Hotel, hence the name of the wreck. Around 10,000 cobs were discovered and some were sold in the above white clamshell boxes which were produced by Spink and Son. This piece can be attributed as 1623 due to it being die matched utilizing other examples and the bottom portion of “3” being present. The coin presents quite well with a decent strike and nice chunky planchet, being 0.5 grams over weight despite being a shipwreck piece
