A silver tetradrachm minted under King Perseus of Macedon. Issued under magistrate Zoilos at the Pella or Amphipolis mint, circa 174 - 173 BC. The Kingdom Macedon was a successor state created upon the death of Alexander the Great.

He inherited a kingdom already largely dependent on Rome, but his policies aroused Roman suspicions and armed conflict became inevitable. At the battle of Pydna, in 168 B.C., Perseus lost his kingdom and he died two years later as an exile in Italy.

The obverse with the diademed head of Perseus facing right, a diadem cutting through the rough curls of his hair. The reverse with an open winged eagle, a thunderbolt in its talons, surrounded by an oak wreath. The inscription reading: BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠEPΣEΩΣ "Of King Perseus". A beautiful Hellenistic portrait of the last Greek ruler of Macedon before the Roman conquest.
